Do you apply enough sunscreen?

Most Australians do not apply enough sunscreen when they go out into the sun. Research has shown that typical we apply half or less of the amount we should apply. If you apply less, then you do not have the protection you thought you had. This can lead to an increase risk of sunburn and increase you chance of melanoma and skin cancer.

Tonight I launched the Australian Medical Association (NSW) sun protection awareness campaign: #Sunscreenburnout. Spoke with Channel 10 national news highlighting the risks of sunscreen burnout by using expired or heat damaged sunscreen, as well as simply not applying enough.

Latest research into attitudes towards sun protection in Australia

My most recent internationally published article documents the attitudes towards sun protection of attendees to dermatology clinics. It demonstrates that whilst we are aware of the need to sun protect and the ways to sun protect, unfortunately we are still not implementing this message well. It is especially disappointing to see the incidence of sunburn in 18-30 year olds, which means the sun protection messages is failing at times.
